in partnership wtih the G. William Jones Film & Video Collection, SMU Libraries
presents,
La Strada (1954) by Federico Fellini
Within the scope of this year’s festival theme, “The Community of Cinema,” it’s hard to imagine a more apt film than Federico Fellini’s 1954 masterpiece, La Strada. As noted by renowned Italian-American director, Martin Scorsese, who first saw the film (dubbed into English) as a child, the film not only features an international cast (the protagonists are the Mexican-American actor, Anthony Quinn, and Fellini’s wife, Giulietta Masina) but also draws from a long theatrical and cinematic tradition, ranging from the stock characters of the Commedia dell’arte to the tragicomedy imbued by Charlie Chaplin. 108 min., Italian with English subtitles.
